Since 2011, Erik and I have been making and collecting cocktail recipes. Cocktails are a curious arena, at once indulgent yet diplomatic: the line between invigorating and toxic easily muddled. Not to mention historical: many of the classic date back to the late 1800s.

Ah, the negroni. The first time I ever visited the Holland House (RIP), this is the cocktail I ordered. And I hated it. I thought it tasted of earwax, I sent it back, refused to be charged for it, etc etc. Basically threw a holier-than-thou-24-year-old fit. (Sorry HH). This drink was simply more mature than I was, and it would take a few years for me to catch up to it. 

This is your classic aperatif, enjoy outside after a sunny afternoon to prepare yourself for dinner. 


1 oz gin

1 oz campari

1 oz sweet vermouth

Add ingredients together in cocktail shaker, shake well with cracked ice, strain into chilled cocktail glass, garnish with orange peel
