Since 2011, Erik and I have been making and collecting cocktail recipes. Cocktails are a curious arena, at once indulgent yet diplomatic: the line between invigorating and toxic easily muddled. Not to mention historical: many of the classic date back to the late 1800s.

Boulvardier

A newer cocktail to The Dandy Branch repertoire, and introduced to me (from the NYT recipes) as a negroni with whiskey instead of gin. An interesting mash-up, it holds you off and invites you in at the same time if you can believe it. A stiff drink.

Boulvardier:

1 1/2 oz bourbon

3/4 oz sweet vermouth

3/4 oz campari

twist of orange peel for garnish

Chill a cocktail glass for 5 minutes, pour liquid ingredients into shaker, fill 2/3rds full with ice, and stir until chilled about 30 seconds. Strain into cocktail glass, garnish with orange twist.
